Survival of the Fittest
Most of the time we are thinking about something. It's rare that we ever cease thinking and focus on nothing. The human condition is that our mind is always operating to survive. This is the ego's way to preserve itself. Most of the time we are not telling ourselves what to think, our thinking tells us how to act. So most of the time we operate unconsciously. You never know this is going on until you try to "take captive" your thoughts, "be still" or "become conscious" of the moment. It's very hard, and takes a tremendous amount of work. I know because I try to do this daily.
If we can train ourselves to focus on the present moment, that is stop the mind from playing the "tapes" of our past or future, then we will experience peace. I'm telling you it woks. Bu tit's hard work to get there. And I've just barely scratched the surface.
By focusing on the present moment, we shut off the Ego's pestulance. It wants to survive. It's programmed to survive. It tells us what to do. It's doing the thinking for us.
So learn to shut it off. Go in peace. Shalom.
